See
Jan 26th 2004 Power Point for latest developments. There is go-no-go
date sometime in February, but that is just part of good project
management. Biggest challenge is buy-in and cooperation of school
districts. Since it is mandatory, they have no choice.
Pending is

some technical and functional issues with these current RFPs (not

J.A. and Kathryn
Albertson Foundation Offers $35 million Grant for Statewide Student
Information Management System
The J.A. and Kathryn
Albertson Foundation has offered the State of Idaho a $35,000,000
grant opportunity to create a statewide student information
management system featuring on-line resources for parents, teachers,
students, school leaders, policymakers and the
public.
Currently, Idaho has no
standardized, statewide student information management system.
School districts use a variety of collecting and reporting methods.
With this opportunity, Idaho would achieve a standardized process
for managing student information, gain on-line resources for
improving teaching and learning, more efficiently fulfill
accountability measures, and would do this in a quicker time frame
than otherwise possible.
"Our goal in offering this
grant is to help Idaho achieve its vision of providing parents,
teachers and students the data and knowledge they need, when they
need it, to make the best decisions for students," said A. Craig
Olson, executive director of the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson
Foundation.
"This will be a tremendous
tool for students, parents, teachers and school administrators,"
stated Governor Kempthorne in his State of the State message. “It is
one thing to measure what's been learned, and another to learn from
what's been measured.
The opportunity builds on
extensive State research into effective student information and
management systems and on lessons learned from a 13-district student
information management program piloted in 2001 by the State
Department of Education through a $3.5 million grant from the J.A.
and Kathryn Albertson Foundation.
On-line resources and tools
available with the new system would
include:
For Parents and
Students
Progress reports, homework
assignments, attendance records, progress toward graduation
requirements
For Teachers
Curriculum and lesson plans,
class assessment and progress reports, standards-based report cards,
tools for communicating with parents on homework, attendance,
progress toward student goals
For Schools and
School Districts
Aggregated student data on
state and local tests, state and national comparison data, school,
district and program performance data
For the Public, State
Board of Education, State Superintendent of Public Instruction,
Legislature, Governor's Office
Aggregated student
achievement information, state and national comparison data,
district and state report cards
If accepted by the State,
grant funds would be used to build, provide training for and start
up an Idaho Student Information Management System over the next two
to three years. The State would fund and maintain the system after
the grant funds expire.
"Our goal is to
Improve Education in Idaho, " said Olson. "We believe that the data
and resources provided through this opportunity, when used
effectively by teachers, parents, students and others, can make a
positive and lasting difference to all Idaho's
students."
